Hout Bay & Llandudno Heritage Trust - some Questions
& Answers.
What is a Heritage Trust?
The Hout Bay & Llandudno Heritage Trust is a body, being a legal entity,
formed under the auspices of the Hout Bay Museum. It is composed of individual
and corporate members who in turn elect Trustees to determine and direct
the policy of the Trust.
What is our mission.? - Is it unique?
No. Many towns and cities have similar Trusts or Heritage Societies, most
of which are formed to safeguard historic buildings or create parks and preserve
natural open spaces. The City of Cape Town also has a Heritage Trust and
we are indebted to them for their help in assisting us to establish our own
Trust.
Why do we need a Heritage Trust ?
Hout Bay and Llandudno have had inadequate administrative infrastructures
for many years and whilst we now have a formal Local Government in place,
it is clear that our Municipality cannot address many of the environmental
issues, in which we have an interest, without our help. Understandably, our
Municipality is pre-occupied with welfare, education and socio-economic issues
primarily. In the past, there have been many efforts by well intentioned,
capable people and ad hoc groups to address some of the issues we are focusing
on but the very fact that they had no legal standing was a severe handicap
and they were invariably pushed aside by authorities and developers alike.
The Heritage Trust has legal standing and with your support, and that of
other members, we have accreditation to liaise direct with the South Peninsula
Municipality and have the "clout" to lobby at the highest levels.
Who qualifies for membership ?
Any individual or any corporate entity who is interested in the aims of the
Trust and who pays a modest annual membership fee. We also have affiliate
membership for Clubs and Schools.
Who are the "Trustees" ?
The Trustees are members who are elected and rotated annually, by the members,
who qualify by way of their professional skills or extensive experience and
are seen by the Members as being most suitable to formulate the policy of
the Trust. The members of the Trust also annually elect a Management Committee
who are responsible for the day to day running and the various projects
undertaken by the Trust. The Management Committee is also responsible for
the creation of Special Interest Groups which may be permanent or temporary
depending on the type of projects undertaken.
How does the Trust fit in with other local Groups and Forums
?
It is not our intention to conflict in any way with other groups or ad hoc
committees; on the contrary, we are able to co-operate with them to produce
the synergy needed to solve many of our communitys environmental
problems.
Is there a political motive ?
No, most certainly not. However we do see that some of the issues that we
wish to address have been made into political footballs by political parties
and civic associations. It is our aim to continue to take the initiative
and raise issues above party politics.
What are the Special Interest Groups within the Trust?
There are many areas of interest, some of which are long term, while others
may require the minimal effort of a one or two man special interest group.
Typical examples of permanent special interest groups would be:- Town Planning
& Aesthetics, Natural Environment Conservation, Walking Trails, Historic
Buildings and Sites, Alien vegetation control, Military History preservation
etc. Some projects may be of very short duration and may only require an
ad-hoc sub committee consisting of one or two people.
