| The Formation of Hout Bay's River
Forum In May 1998, the Chairman of the Hout Bay & Llandudno Heritage Trust approached the CMC Catchment Dept with a view to securing funding for research into the possibility of re-habilitating the wetlands area of the lower reaches of Hout Bay's River. The CMC agreed that funding was possible but that it could only be released via a representative Catchment Committee which was formed in due course following several meetings at which members of community organisations were represented. In Jan 1999 the Hout Bay Catchment Forum was formally inaugurated and the first of the formal quarterly meetings was held at the Hout Bay Library. Since then the Catchment Forum has facilitated the commencement of the first stage of the river project, being the restoration of the POS area on the West bank of the Hout Bay River below Princess Bridge and the area of POS immediately above it. At the time of writing - work has commenced on the clearing of alien vegetation and Environmental Consultants Chittenden Nicks & Partners have been appointed as project managers. The intention is, during subsequent phases, to extend activity into the wetland to the North of the bridge. D.C. 28/07/99 . |
