Johann Gottfried Gericke was born in 1741 in Harkerode in Germany. He came to the Cape in 1772 to work for the Dutch East India Company as a wagon maker.

His genealogical number is A1. He fathered twelve children numbered form B1 to B12. Their children were the C generation, and so on.
