South African Currency. |
||
The original monetary system was obviously inherited from the Netherlands. When the Cape was taken over by the English in 1806 the British system was introduced and retained until 1961 when the decimal currency of the Republic of South Africa came into use.
Money values obviously fluctuated over the years and direct comparisons would be most confusing. The Dutch/Sterling conversion in the table would have been reasonably accurate in the late 18th century. The Sterling/Rand conversion was true in 1961 but by 1998 the value of the Rand had dropped from 2 Rand/Pound to 8 Rand/Pound. An interesting alternative view is to look at the price of one item, in 1700 the cost of a sheep was 4.5 Guilders, in 1900 it had increased to 1 Pound and by 1998 the same sheep fetched R240.
